First time using sWord?

Ok, well lets take things step by step then.

sWord is a very powerful tool which will let you do just about anything with your documents. It is also very easy to use, but like with everything new, it may seem overwhelming the first time you use it. So lets get that first hurdle out of the way....

Our goal is to make a "Hello World" page visible to anyone who visits the site.

To achieve this, we are going to make a brand new document from scratch, add some text and publish it.

Make sure that you have entered sWord, then follow these simple steps:

Step 1 : Make a New Document

  • Choose File > New from the Menu Bar.
  • sWord will open the Satellite Window to the New Document screen.
  • Type Hello World into the field Title.
  • Press the Create button once.
  • Wait for the Satellite Window to close, and your main browser window to refresh.

Step 2 : Add some text

If your main browser screen now contains a document entitled "Hello World", then you have just successfully created a new document. Congratulations!

Now lets add some text. Here's how:

  • Double click the Paragraph Tag Icon (not sure what that is - click here).
  • sWord will open the Satellite Window to the Tag Editing screen.
  • Type Welcome to my page! into the text field provided.
  • Press the Update button once.
  • Wait for the Satellite Window to close, and your main browser window to refresh.

Step 3 : Format the text

If you wanted to, you could add lots more text, tables, pictures, link and attachments at this point. But for the sake of simplicity lets just do a little text formatting and move on.

We want to align Welcome to my page! to the center. Here's how:

  • Click the Paragraph Tag Icon once to select it.
  • Click the Center Align button in the Button Bar (don't know what that is - click here).
  • Wait for your main browser window to refresh.
  • The paragraph should now be centered.

Now let's make it bold. Here's how:

  • Click the Paragraph Tag Icon once to select it.
  • Click the Bold button in the Button Bar (don't know what that is - click here).
  • Wait for your main browser window to refresh.
  • The paragraph should now be centered AND bold.

That's it. Very easy.

Step 4 : Preview it

Before publishing, it's usually a good idea to preview your document. This will give you an idea of what it will look like without all those tag icons cluttering things up. Here's how:

  • Choose View > Preview from the Menu Bar.
  • Wait for your main browser window to refresh.

To get back into edit view:

  • Choose View > Edit from the Menu Bar.
  • Wait for your main browser window to refresh.

In the real world, you'd probably go back and fine tune your document at this point, but we are going to move on.

Step 5 : Publish it

Ok. We have now made our document, edited it, previewed it, and we love it. Now it's time to publish it.

There are many different publishing options available to you, but we are going to use the most common one for now - publish for all users. That means that the document can be viewed by anyone who visits your site.

  • Choose File > Publish from the Menu Bar.
  • sWord will open the Satellite Window to the Publish screen.
  • Press the Yes, I'm Sure button once to confirm.
  • Wait for the Satellite Window to close, and your main browser window to refresh.

All done. Your document is now published.
